What is it like for a Hindu to live in a Muslim dominated area?
There is one major question and two sub questions.
Ans
1: Pretty normal if you are irreligious, don’t care about being a
Hindu. If you don’t wear a tilak, don’t wear a dhaga on your hand or if
your janeu is not visible, if you don’t play Hindu devotional songs, if
you worship your God with pin drop silence at home, if you never
criticize any Islamic belief or men/women, if you maintain your silence
and enjoy some friends among the Muslim community, can read Urdu or
Nastaliq script, if you have no dietary issues and if you don’t mind
being called mushrikeen/malaun/lollay/etc you should be fine as a Hindu
man in a Muslim dominated area. Otherwise it is suffocating for those
who are new.
Ans 2: Newcomers, guests or
relatives who visit for short duration live in fear. They don’t go out.
This is especially true for the young women. The instances of eve
teasing somehow increases 10 times as compared to areas with Hindu/Sikh
majority.
Ans 3: Yes. Religious processions are
almost unofficially banned. If allowed, they are for PR exercises or in
front of the media or if some politician comes. Non Muslim religious
practices are frowned upon and sometimes stones are pelted to discourage
us from celebrating. There is some excuse or another - disturbing
communal harmony, not letting people sleep (even when there is no sound
at all) and so on. There are cases of sexual assault, though this is
still rare. But in any case, the Hindus generally keep mum, fearing
reprisals.

Note: I have not lived in any muslim dominated area, but very close to it say around 500 metres.
There is Seelampur (Delhi Assembly constituency)
and jafrabad (adjacent to it) nearest metro station seelampur.
Seelampur is purely Muslim doninated area, famously known for being a
safe shelter to criminals and terrorists across north India as Delhi
police patrol team can't even enter the inner residential colony with
uniform especially at night.
Head of alqaeda (India) arrested from seelampur, Delhi.
Criminal from seelampur killed Delhi police constable at karkardooma court.
NIA arrested resident of seelampur, Delhi for inspiring youth to join ISIS
I can tell you n number of such incidents when either the criminal was hiding there or was a resident of seelampur.
I
would like to share an incident when a Delhi police constable on
regular patrolling, entered the danger area with his rifle. Some goons
snatched his rifle, beat him and told him to leave.
The police constable came back to his police station and told everyone about it. At that time mishra (I
don't remember the exact name. His caste was mishra.) was in charge of
the north east district. He came to know about the incident. People who
have seen , worked or ever heard about him know that he is very
disciplined, strict and he loves his department more than anything else.
He called the constable and took him to the same area. He took loud
speaker and announced " aaj sham 6 baje tak kaa time deta hoon, agar rifle thane naa pahunchi toh ek- ek Ki ********* karunga"
And
as expected rifle was back in police station well before the time
limit. Later on he got promotion/ transfer and the situation of
seelampur is same (as it was before mishra sir) or even worse.

I live in a
supposedly posh area nearby Central Mumbai, one of the richest in India.
It is Muslim dominated and has plenty of rich and poor Muslims.
One
day, I booked a taxi for going to a cinema. The driver automatically
assumed me as a Muslim. He was a very decent and polite person. We were
having nice conversation. In between, he starts talking about the idol
worship in Hindu communities. He blames Hindus for all the ills in
Muslim neighborhoods. Further he said that so many unknown prophets
failed to got rid of illogical idolatry and gods and goddesses being
worshipped by Hindus. He also told me that this was not his country as
India was a land of kafirs and polluted by so many gods and goddesses.
He
was talking all this to me in a very pleasant and scholarly tone as he
assumed I was from a prosperous Muslim family in Kurla Mumbai. Further
he asked me to donate time and money to the cause of daawah to non
believers.
Finally when Big Carnival Cinemas
Wadala came, I revealed to him that I'm a Hindu. He became flustered and
started repeating we all are sons of Adams and Hindus are good.
One of the many incidents.
